Herbie Hancock joins L.A. Phil

Bowl shows include Philip Glass, Beastie Boys

Herbie Hancock has been named the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Creative Chair for Jazz and will begin a two-year tenure beginning with the 2010 season.

Hancock will succeed Christian McBride, who has held the post since 2006. He will oversee jazz programming at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

The Bowl also rounded out its summer season at Monday's announcement, filling in some of the TBA dates.

Some of the new and previously announced highlights:

Faith Hill will make her Bowl debut on July 17 and18;
On June 19, the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame will induct Kiri Te Kanawa and Josh Groban; past inductees John Williams and Garth Brooks will present the evening.
Philip Glass, also making his Bowl debut, will accompany the film "Koyaaniqatsi: Life Out of Balance" on July 23 in a new arrangement commissioned by the L.A. Phil;
Jewel and Michael Feinstein will present "The Art of Song" on July 24 and 25;
A concert adaptation of "Guys and Dolls" will be staged, starring Jessica Biel, Scott Bakula, John Mahoney and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
Placido Domingo will make his Bowl conducting debut, collaborating with Yo Yo Ma in an Aug. 25 performance;
Liza Minnelli will appear on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29;
"Rodgers and Hammerstein At the Movies" will rep the venue's Big Picture night, on Sept. 6.
Beastie Boys will make their Bowl debut on Sept 24.

Thanks for posting the dates!

btw..I am SO glad Scott's playing Nathan Detroit rather than the 'lead', Sky Masterson, who's role, IMHO, is very boring. Scott will rock as Nathan!

Interesting that as of yet, there's no listing for his love interest, "Miss Adelaide".

It may be March, but all eyes and ears on the West Coast are focusing on July, 2009, when the Hollywood Bowl will present Frank Loesser's Guys & Dolls as their annual musical.

Guys and Dolls in Concert combines the color and pizzazz of Damon Runyon's legendary musical comedy characters with Frank Loesser's dazzling score and the starry cast will feature Jessica Biel (as Sarah Brown) in her Hollywood Bowl debut, as well as Scott Bakula (Nathan Detroit), John Mahoney (Arvide Abernathy), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Sky Masterson), Ken Page (Nicely-Nicely Johnson) and Ruth Williamson (General Matilda Cartwright).

The same creative team behind last summer's Les Misérables in Concert, director Richard Jay-Alexander and conductor Kevin Stites, plus choreographer Donna McKechnie, bring this timeless classic to life (July 31, August 1 and August 2).

No casting has been announced yet for the role of Miss Adelaide, which would signal, based on the caliber of stars listed here, that they're up to something good.

We learned back in December, from the Hollywood Bowl...last summer's artistic team will be jumping from Les Miserables, the world's most popular musical, to what may be possibly be the greatest American musical of all time...Guys & Dolls, with a crackling book by Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows and a glorious score, with music & lyrics by Frank Loesser.

Returning to the Hollywood Bowl after last summer's successful and sold out Les Miserables in Concert, the Director will be Richard Jay-Alexander. Kevin Stites will once again serve as Musical Director, conducting The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In addition, other artistic holdovers from Les Miserables will be Evan A. Bartoletti as Scenic Designer and Lighting Design by Tom Ruzika.

Guys & Dolls in Concert at The Hollywood Bowl is being presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Producers are Steve Linder of IMG Artists and Brian Grohl from LA Phil/Hollywood Bowl.

Music and Lyrics are by Frank Loesser, with the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City and dubbed as "A Musical Fable of Broadway", this oddball romantic comedy - considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy - soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters who have become legends in the canon: Sarah Brown, the upright but uptight "mission doll," out to reform the evildoers of Time Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler who woos her on a bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game.

Thanks for the news!

I wish they'd record this and air it on PBS the way they have other "in concert" plays and musicals. Every time I see one listed, I wish/hope Scott would do one someday.

Thanks so much for these links, Helene, and for the great news.

I've wished that Scott would do Guys and Dolls ever since I saw him pantomime that fluid, sexy, let-it-all-ride roll of the dice when he sang that snippet of 'Luck Be a Lady' at the HB with Carol Burnett!

I might have hoped for Scott to be the romantic lead in this one, ~~sigh~~ but I guess if Nathan Detroit was good enough for Sinatra to play then it's a good enough role for Scott, who I'm certain will do ever so much more with the character than Ol' Blue Eyes did.

Scott sure is in some exalted company for this production, ain't he?

Scott is having a wonderful year...with TV work, QL Con, Series pick up from TNT, Oscar worthy movie and now this play. He's keeping all his venues open.

I've always thought this was a role worth seeing Scott in.

This is very exciting news! This website has been my lifeline to know what Scott is doing - I already have my DVR primed to tape Chuck - but now, maybe I can get to see him perform again (last time was the Youv'e Got to Have Friends in 2004).
I won't be able to go Friday night because work won't let us have the last day of the month off, but Saturday looks good.....

I was wondering if anybody is traveling to see Scott in "Guys and Dolls". The tickets go on sale for non-subscribers (general public) on May 2nd, but you can start purchasing them now with advance sales code "BOWL2009" (http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/tickets/performance_detail.cfm?id=4171). Mrs. Adelaine will be played by Ellen Greene, the lady who played Audrey in "Little Shop of Horrors". She is great.

I would really, really like to go see it, but I'm kind of worried about traveling to LA all by myself (husband can't take time off from work). I've been there before several times, but I was younger and more daring then. It would help if I could hook up with somebody, maybe stay at the same hotel, share a rental car, meet at the bowl. I'm from Austin, Tx.

Gosh, I feel like I know all of you ladies since I've been reading your posts. I enjoy your videos, pictures, and collages so much!!!

I will be traveling from Austin, TX. Travel by myself is OK, and it's also OK if we don't seat together. What I was worried about is to be all by myself in LA, when it is much more fun to get together with other Scott fans. So, could I, please, join you gals from the UK at LA? What hotel will you be staying in so that I can stay there too? (If you are concerned about privacy issues, please, send me email with this info). Could we go to the bowl together? How? Via shuttle?

Right now, the seat that I can get is in either section E left, or section J2 center (a bit farther back than E but center). Which one would be better? I never been to the bowl, so I would appreciate any advice. I was thinking of attending all 3 nights, might as well, after all it's Scott singing live!

I wasn't a fan of Scott until a few months ago, but, men, I have a bad case of "Scott adoration" now that I have learned how nice a person he is. I'm really looking forward to hear him sing live. I watch his tapes, listen to his cds, have his pictures and videos in my cell phone, have earned the Bakulogoly degree at least twice, ace most of the quantum leap questions, read the posts, follow the stories, get inspired and motivated from his work, in short, I share the love for Scott.

Hello everyone. I've been away for a while. I got caught up with family, friends, work and ultimately graduating from college in Pennsylvania last year. This is great news that Scott is doing this. However, with student loans taking a bite out of my income, I would not be able to afford the trip out there. Oh well, if Scott does something in NYC, I'd be one of the first to jump in line.
