Juli & Donna, I have to jump on the bandwagon, too. This was my first experience seeing Scott perform live, and I was blown away. Donna's right, as good as Scott's voice was before, it's strengthened over the years. Although, come to think of it, parts of I Don't Believe in Heroes Anymore (from 3 Guys Naked) did foreshadow what was to come; I've Heard It All Before reminded me a lot of that. But there's a depth of feeling and a maturity in his voice that wasn't there before.

Something in the show itself that I've wondered about is the difference in the way the relationship between The Boy and Charlie was shaded in the movie and in the play.

I'm not talking about the change in the ending. Even before Scott explained that in the Q&A, I picked up on why it was done. The difference I mean hinges on Charlie's line, "When I look at him I see her," meaning Martha. The movie plays it almost as if the father hates The Boy for surviving when his mother died, that it hurts him to look at Robert. But Scott played it as Robert being a fond reminder, the last tangible connection with his wife. I wonder if that was the director's conscious choice, or whether it arose spontaneously from Scott's own nature through readings and rehearsals.

I've often thought (and occasionally said) that Scott can convey more emotion with the flicker of an eyelid than a lot of actors do with their whole faces. Being used to seeing Scott only on TV, with close-ups as needed, I didn't think that would translate on stage. Boy, was I wrong! I underestimated Scott's ability to shade a performance with a tilt of his shoulder, a cocked head, a ramrod straight back. Where some actors might have sagged, sobbed, or stumbled when Jennie starts singing Papa's Gonna Make It All Right to the baby, Scott's Charlie stiffens as if stabbed in the heart by the realization that he can't make this "all right."

Juli, I wish too that Ford's would make a cast recording available. Scott didn't think that was likely. And while I don't care to see anyone else in the role , if you go to see it with Sutherland, please do tell us about it.
